What is an AC isolation transformer?

An isolation transformer, which often has symmetrical windings, is used to decouple two circuits. An isolation transformer allows an AC signal or power to be taken from one device and fed into another without electrically connecting the two circuits. Isolation transformers can be used to block transmission of DC signals from one circuit to the other, but allow AC signals to pass. They will also block interference caused by ground loops. Hammond AC Isolation Transformers

Hammond AC power isolation transformers support primary 115VAC, 50/60 Hz., and Secondary 95VAC. These Hammond AC power isolation transformers provide circuit isolation. Hammond AC isolation transformers have electrostatic shield between primary and secondary. These AC isolation transformers support world wide applications, 50 or 60 Hz. operation, step down (115VAC to 95 VAC). Hammond power isolation transformers are perfect for operating "Classic" equipment that can not tolerate today's higher line voltages (ie.125 VAC input will produce a stress free 105 VAC output at full load + isolation and shielding). Hammond AC isolation transformers come standard with the 3-wire, grounded plug and can also be used with adaptors for proper grounding.

Hammond AC isolation transformers are input (primary) with a 5 foot long cord and standard North American plug (NEMA 5-15P) Output (secondary) with to two standard - 3 wire grounded receptacles. Shielded AC Power Isolation Transformers
Shielded isolation transformers have all the features of the standard isolation transformers plus they also incorporate a full metallic shielding (this shielding is often copper or aluminum) between the primary and secondary windings. These shielded isolation transformers are then referred to as electrostaticly shielded isolation transformers. The electrostatic shield ("Faraday Shield") is connected to earth ground and performs two functions:

1) It filters (attenuates) voltage spikes (voltage transients). These shielded isolation transformers have an attenuation ratio of 100 to 1.

2) It filters common mode noise. This is usually an attenuation of approximately 30 decibels.
